Toyota: Moving Forward

December 20th, 2008 --

250px-toyotasvg.pngThe Toyota Motor Corporation was founded by Kiichiro Toyoda of Japan in 1936. Toyota had its humble beginnings as a division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, a textile company. In 1993 it was encouraged by the Japanese government to venture into the construction of vehicles because of the shortage of vehicles brought about by the war with China.

Cars built by them originally carried the “Toyoda” brand. But Risaburo Toyoda, who married into the family, pressed that “Toyota” be used instead. In Japan, it is quite common for the male to take the family name of the female, especially if it is a prominent name. Risaburo reasoned that the “Toyota” used 8 brush strokes and was thus a lucky number. And since the family name translated to “rice field” it would prevent associating themselves with the farming industry.

Davao as a retirement haven for foreigners

December 20th, 2008 --

Ret. Gen. Edgar B. Aglipay, chairman of The Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA), said that they are working hard to position the Philippines as a haven for foreign retirees who will be drawn to the country by its lower cost of living (and tropical climate, I might add).

Steps for applying for a Philippine Retirement Visa can be found here. This is different from the recently signedExecutive Order No. 758 or the Special Visa for Employment Generation (SVEG), which allows a foreigner to stay indefinitely in the country if they employ 10 or more people in a business that they have set up in the Philippines.

Davao Archdiocese Diamond Jubilee Indulgences

December 18th, 2008 --

Archbishop Capalla, head of the Davao Archdiocese of the Catholic Church, announced via pastoral letter last Sunday that indulgences for people’s inner renewal will be granted in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of the Davao City Archdiocese.

Definition of a Catholic Indulgence

An indulgence is the extra-sacramental remission of the temporal punishment due, in God’s justice, to sin that has been forgiven, which remission is granted by the Church in the exercise of the power of the keys, through the application of the superabundant merits of Christ and of the saints, and for some just and reasonable motive. What is Temporal Punishment in a Catholic Context?

Catholic theology teaches that there are two punishments for sin; one is called eternal and is inflicted in hell, and the other is called temporal and is inflicted in this world or in purgatory. The sacrament of penance remits the eternal punishment and only part of the temporal. Doing penance (prayer, fasting, almsgiving, works of mercy and patient suffering) remits temporal punishment. The purpose for temporal punishment is a satisfaction for sin, and to teach the penitent the great evil of sin and to prevent from falling again.[source]
