20 Secret’s Vendors don’t want you to know

September 14th, 2005 --

You can get more wiser with that next PC purchase by knowing some these secrets that vendors don’t bother to tell you.

  1. You can over clock your PC’s CPU to get more speed out of it. Hence there might not really be a need to purchase that uber fast PC that they’re pitching to you. Overclocking though voids your warranty. But it pays to get more RAM though. Can never get enough computer memory.
  2. Check the season. Some PC manufacturers and PC Retailers have specific months where the price of a PC is low so you can buy cheap computers and cheap laptops from them.
  3. That faster shipping that they’re offering might just be a few days faster than regular or free shipping. If you can wait, then don’t bother to spend that extra money on shipping.
  4. Those extended warranties offered by sales people might benefit the store more than it could benefit you. Financial planners recommend using a credit card when buying to extend the manufacturer’s warranty instead.
  5. Buying Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) can save you more than 50 percent on software. Take advantage of the discount that the PC manufacturers are getting from software manufacturers and are passing on to you. In some online stores, you don’t have to buy a PC to get the OEM software discounts.
  6. Dead Pixels in an LCD screen might not be covered by the Warranty. Check the warranty on your monitor on how many dead pixels before it gets covered by the manufacturers warranty. There is no easy way to fix LCD dead pixels.
  7. Buying a cellphone from the phone company could always mean that you are getting a locked phone. A locked phone can only be used in the network that you bought it from. Although there are some cellphone unlocking software available out in the wild and people who are willing to unlock cellphones for a fee. They usually provide to add cellphone ringtones too with their service *snicker*
  8. That manufacturer PC you are buying does not necesarrily mean that its all been made by them. With the era of specialization, most manufacturers are willing partners in trading their products with one another to be sold and rebranded by the other as their own. Bottom line is that they are still making money even if they weren’t the ones who built it.
  9. Game Consoloes can be hacked. Some games not playing on your Xbox, Wii, PS3? Just go to the web and do a search on PSP Hacks, Xbox Hacks, Wii Hacks etc.
  10. Battery life printed on the box of your gadget does not necessarily reflect actual battery life. So if you’re wondering why you laptop battery or MP3 player suddenly has the low battery light blinking, blame it on marketing.
