Smart Wifi has been the pioneer wireless broadband provider in the Philippines. Originally named Meridian Telecoms before they were bought by Philippine Telco giant, Smart Communications.
The benefit of wireless broadband over traditional broadband is in the ease of setup. Compared to traditional DSL broadband providers, it is easier to setup because the antenna equipment just piggy backs on existing cellular phone towers. Because of this it is also usually the cellular phone service providers who have the technology to deploy this type of internet service.
The benefit of this is that areas which usually have cellphone signals will be able to have wireless broadband service. The downside of wireless broadband service is the current bandwidth that they can provide. Compared to DSL broadband, it is quite lesser. This however can be solved once WiMax Technology is available. Another drawback of wireless broadband is the strict Line-Of-Site requirement between the subscriber’s antenna and the mother antenna at the base station.
Other than that, Wireless broadband is a welcome technology giving the very crucial last-mile connectivity.
