Government mulling the possibility of establishing Agri Zones

April 30th, 2007 --

The DTI said that the government is currently considering the establishment of agricultural zones in the country, most especially in Mindanao in order to spur investors to develop huge idle tracts of land.

One of the deterrents to getting investors to invest in our agriculture was due to the enforcement of comprehesive agrarian reform in the country which mandated that only a total of 5 ha of agricultural land could be retained by an individual (in general, there are some types of use which are exempted.)

The initial idea that they are working on, is that for an area to be classified as an agri zone, it must first have a minimum of 10,000 ha land area and that the locators must export 70% of what they produce.

If this plan pushes through, it could help develop further Mindanao’s reputation as a food basket and provide jobs for the Mindanaon’s.
