Davao Sent 23,000 Workers Overseas

Between, June 2006~2007, 23,000 Citizens of Davao left the City to seek greener pastures abroad. This was reported by Regional Director of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Ron Lionel M. Bartolome.

This figure was based on the number of Davao OFW’s who applied for health insurance through their office as well as the length of the coverage of that health insurance.

Adding further, he said that on average about 600 citizens leave monthly for jobs abroad. For the period considered the highest number of departures was on August with about 850 OFW’s leaving.

The main driver of this exodus was the demand for Medical Workers in Saudi Arabia which required about 5000 people while countries such as Australia, Canada and the US also had a need for skilled medical professionals.
