Faulty Relay Causes Davao Blackout

September 17th, 2007 --

According to officials of Transco, a faulty relay was behind the intermittent power and subsequent blackout which affected most of Mindanao. The blackout started in the morning then power would be restored temporarily then would be shut off again then the cycle would repeat itself. The faulty relay was located at the Kibawe substation.

Contrary to rumors, the substation was not bombed by terrorist groups. Power eventually became stable for the City of Davao at 4PM this afternoon.

The blackout resulted in a lot of business and public offices having a lot of irate customers, aside from the heat, because of no air conditioning, there was the long wait time as offices waited for their systems to get back online. People also had a difficult time of withdrawing funds as ATM machines were taken off line by the blackout.

One local mall even had to shut down its mall and leave only its grocery and department store open as its generators could not handle the load.
