The Kasanag Drop-in Center which opened in Dec 1, 2004 is a project of the City of Mati Welfare and Development Office. Since its opening there have been a sharp increase of kids from neighboring towns taking refuge in the said center. Most of the kids who make a home of the center come from broken families and are between the ages of 6 to 15 years old.
With this information learned from the Center, as to the cause of why the children runaway from their homes, the Mati Social Welfare and Dev’t Office decided to strengthen and promote its course on effective parenting. Although the program has been successful in getting mothers to attend the course, they still feel that they should encourage both parents to come as most of the abuse caused at home originates from the Father.
Aside from being a refuge for street kids, the Kasanag Center also provides basic tutorials to the children. Even at the face of financial problems the center has been able to increase the literacy of the street kids with their tutorial lessons.
