The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) undergraduate scholarships is now on going. The scholarships being offered is open to graduating high school students with high aptitude in science and technology and who are going to take up courses in basic or applied sciences, engineering and science teaching.
This is much different from student loans and similar loan packages because students don’t have to carry the burden of paying back the tuition fees spent on them.
Two scholarship programs are being offered by DOST, RA 7687 and DOST-SEI Merit Scholarships. RA7687 or S&T Scholarship Act of 1994, is given to talented and deserving students coming from poor families. While the latter is granted to students with high aptitude in science, mathematics and technology regardless of the family’s socio-economic status.
To quality for the scholarship programs, a student must possess the following qualifications:
1.) Belongs to the upper 5% of the high school graduating class; 2.) Be a natural-born Filipino citizen; 3.) Be a resident of the municipality for the last 4 yrs.; 4.) Be in good health; and 5.) Be of good moral character; and be a qualifier of the 2009 S&T Scholarship Examination.
Qualified applicants will be awarded tuition fees (not to exceed P6,000.00/sem). Book and uniform allowances, monthly stipend, and insurance.
The deadline for filing of application is on September 30, 2008 and the examination is on November 9, 2008. Application forms and information materials are available at the DOST Regional Office No. XI, Dumanlas cor. Friendship Road, Bajada, Davao City.
