Davao Archdiocese Diamond Jubilee Indulgences

December 18th, 2008 --

Archbishop Capalla, head of the Davao Archdiocese of the Catholic Church, announced via pastoral letter last Sunday that indulgences for people’s inner renewal will be granted in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of the Davao City Archdiocese.

Definition of a Catholic Indulgence

An indulgence is the extra-sacramental remission of the temporal punishment due, in God’s justice, to sin that has been forgiven, which remission is granted by the Church in the exercise of the power of the keys, through the application of the superabundant merits of Christ and of the saints, and for some just and reasonable motive. What is Temporal Punishment in a Catholic Context?

Catholic theology teaches that there are two punishments for sin; one is called eternal and is inflicted in hell, and the other is called temporal and is inflicted in this world or in purgatory. The sacrament of penance remits the eternal punishment and only part of the temporal. Doing penance (prayer, fasting, almsgiving, works of mercy and patient suffering) remits temporal punishment. The purpose for temporal punishment is a satisfaction for sin, and to teach the penitent the great evil of sin and to prevent from falling again.[source]

The archbishop issued a decree establishing the conditions of the jubilee indulgence on the occasion of the diamond jubilee celebration.

Capalla cited the following conditions for gaining the jubilee indulgences :

  1. Pilgrimage to one of the seven old churches in Davao: San Pedro Cathedral, Sta. Ana Shrine, Our Lady of the Assumption, Sto. Rosario in Toril, Sacred Heart of Jesus in Calinan, Carmelite Monastery Chapel in Bajada and the Perpetual Adoration Chapel of the Pink Sisters;
  2. The prayers to be recited while in pilgrimage: five times Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be, and one Hail Holy Queen.
  3. To avail of the sacrament of reconciliation within the jubilee year (go to confession)
  4. To offer a holy mass for the intention of the jubilee
  5. An act of charity.
