The Toyota Motor Corporation was founded by Kiichiro Toyoda of Japan in 1936. Toyota had its humble beginnings as a division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, a textile company. In 1993 it was encouraged by the Japanese government to venture into the construction of vehicles because of the shortage of vehicles brought about by the war with China.
Cars built by them originally carried the “Toyoda” brand. But Risaburo Toyoda, who married into the family, pressed that “Toyota” be used instead. In Japan, it is quite common for the male to take the family name of the female, especially if it is a prominent name. Risaburo reasoned that the “Toyota” used 8 brush strokes and was thus a lucky number. And since the family name translated to “rice field” it would prevent associating themselves with the farming industry.
On August 1937, the Toyoto Motor Company was trademarked, registered and finally spun off as a separate company. To this day, Toyota is still in the textile business, building automated weaving machines and sewing machines.
