Republic Act 9504 which amends the National Internal Revenue Code of 1987 was signed into law by the President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, yesterday in Malacanang.
This law grants exemption for minimum wage earners from having to pay income tax. It also increased the personal exemptions of employees. It also exempts minimum wage earners from being taxed in their holiday, night differential, hazard and overtime pay.

According to a report by the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE). Out of a total population of 89 Million in the Philippines, only 430,681 have active accounts with brokers in the Philippine Stock Exchange. Still an alarming statistic, is that out of the 430k, only 103,412 actively use their accounts and trade stocks.
In comparison with other Asian countries: Singapore has the highest population who trade in stocks and invest in the stock market by virtue of a 33% mark. Singapore beats out Japan and Australia who have 25% of their population who are stock investing. Malaysia then comes next with 18%, Hong Kong 17% and lastly Korea with 10%.

Davao City Councilor, Leo Avila, told reporters that the City consumes about 9000 sacks of rice a day. This came as he announced preparations for a “riceless day” with other non government organizations, in order to send the message across to rice traders of the exorbitant price of rice.
Considering that the last census by the government pegs Davao City to have a population of over 2M. For a 50 kg/bag of rice that will the city consuming about 450,000kg of rice a day or about .225kg rice/person.

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) company’s are in Davao City to meet with the school administrators to discuss on how the schools can adequately prepare the students to the global outsourcing industry that the BPO’s are in. It is a mutually beneficial forum with each trying to address the others needs. BPO’s want labor for their companies and schools want workplaces for their graduates.
The meetup was entitled “BPO Human Resource & Recruitment Forum” and was organized by ICT Davao, Inc. This is the second forum organized by the group which aims to accelerate the development of Davao City as the leading information, communication and technology (ICT) hub in Mindanao.
